"The characters are so rich and real even 200+ years after it was written. It's like a time capsule, but it also doesn't actually feel that old once you get into the story and the language. It's a great example of how people don't really change that much over time. Also, more men should be like Mr Darcy - listening when you say no, and working on themselves not to get your attention, but because you made them realise they need to do better. I'm not even into men, I just think more men should be like that. "

"He didn't just write successful books, he invented full languages that connect to each other. The way English is connected to Old English and is connected to Old Norse - he did that with his invented languages. Tolkien was actually a genius. I haven't even read LOTR yet but I HAD to vote for it."

Alice’s Adventures in Wonde...

by

"I think every child should read this book at the age I did, which was somewhere between the ages of 9 and 11. It's actually a perfect depiction of childhood - Alice has very little control over what happens to her, and is whisked from place to place at the whims of people who do strange things. She's constantly changing in size and doesn't know where she is. It's also a great story with the type of absurdity that's perfectly engaging for a child, but it does really get into a child's mind even if they don't realise it. "
