Thirteen Moons

"This was a great story, and it gave me a belated sense of some of the tragedy of Andrew Jackson's efforts to relocate the Cherokee to Oklahoma. Like "Cold Mountain," there's a lot of history here. I was particularly struck by the Great Bear's explanation as to why the Cherokee had chosen to live in the mountains; i.e. in the mountains, they felt as though they were cupped in the hands of the great spirit (my paraphrase). I feel that way living here as well.

"Good historical foundation like all of McCrumb's books but also a bibliography, which led me to some other great reference books, including Robert Trotter's history of the Civil War in the Mountains of N.C. "

"It's a classic of American literature, and I think the developmental history of Asheville is central to any top ten of regional mountain fiction"
