"Amy Tan is one of my favourite writers. She is deft at handling political satire, social satire, and creating believable characters. Deeply imbued with Chinese-American values, she nevertheless is thoroughly her own person. She has what all writers want: a distinctive voice. Amy Tan's gift is that of the ageless Sage who holds a mirror up to the human race and gently brings us into focus so that we can see ourselves more clearly and objectively. My favourite of her books is Saving Fish From Drowning, a masterpeice of understated social/political satire that conveys a powerful message about cultural assumptions, well-intended meddling and unintended consequences. Her tone is deceptively 'light' but her writing is never trivial. I think Tan is Nobel material."
