Willow I must ask...I'm dying of curiosity. Why do you dislike Hilary Mantel so much? I've never read anything by her.

message 2: by Jenny (new)

Jenny She has a bad attitude! I recon i know more about history than she does!
I've read the reviews , and her recent interviews in the papers confirmed everything i thought about her.

Jenny Ever heard the saying " don't bite the hand that feeds you"?
Recent comments disparaging and demeaning historical fiction and those that read this genre ,is "biting the hand that feeds".It doesn't make a great commercial for her books!

Jenny here's one , http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/culture/...
It was continued on Sky Arts the book show .
I call this "foot in mouth" syndrome!

Willow Oh wow, that article just insulted one of my favorite authors, Bernard Cornwell. I don't read his Sharpe books, but I love his three medieval series. How rude. You can praise a new author without insulting everybody else.

So now I want to ask, what makes a good historical novel? I certainly don't read historical fiction to learn history. (What kind of crap statement was that?) After all, there’re thousands of fascinating nonfiction books out there, which in many ways I prefer.

I read historical fiction to spark my imagination and to have history come to life. I love being pulled into another world.

I’ll be honest, I’ve never read Hilary Mantel because her books look sort of boring.

What a condescending article.
