Have you read The Great Promise by Frederick L Coxen? It approaches WWI from the personal memoirs of a Royal Field Artillery telephonist. The journal entries are compelling and describes what it was like to live through hell. The story line is a promise that was made between four RFA soldiers. The only war survivor failed to keep his commitment and almost 100 years later his grandson attempts to make good on the promise.
