Since this is a "favorite books" list and not a BEST list I am trying to be subjective! These are the novels (and I'm also consciously leaving off Shakespeare, philosophy, nonfiction etc.) that most automatically come to me as the ones I've loved & that I need to keep on hand . . . That said, I remain very confident that Persuasion and Emma are the two greatest novels of the English language, The Secret History is the best novel of the past quarter-century, and The Girls of Slender Means the most satisfying prose of the 20th Century-- so yeah, I'm gonna swear by the top tier of my rankings!
