"The book introduces the use of psychological profiling of mass murderers. It is set in the late 1800s in NY City when Teddy Roosevelt was the police commissioner and describes the times vividly. Roosevelt hires a Jew, an Italian, and a woman to be a part of a special team to track down a mass murderer, all exceptional things to do in that time. I do enjoy good mysteries that teach me about the historical times. It was quite gory, however.
