not sure I consider those 'difficult' books - but sadly, in the 21st Century, they probably qualify (as people read more and more blogs and fewer and fewer books)

was not meant to be - making objective comment on contemporary readers - not on you, personally - I presume you're a serious reader, having read Tolstoy - others would find it intimidating and not have the stamina
