The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

"Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (2001)

The plot of the book (the protagonist's escape from Germany) is central to the story. Yet, after beginning the story with Josef's extreme difficulty in escaping from Prague prior to the beginning of WWII, the author glazes over the ease with which Josef's brother somehow manages to make his way to Lisbon, Portugal near the end of the novel without ever offering any explanation at all." The characters are so stereotypical that they seem like they're right out of central casting. And with one (maybe two) rare exceptions, I never grew to care about the characters." See Review |

Slaughterhouse-Five

Oddly enough, even though I had read 15 of Vonnegut's books, I had never read SF until recently. Since it was quite possibly his most famous book, I expected a great deal. I was extremely disappointed since I think many of his other books are superior to this one." See Review |

The Round House

National Book Award for Fiction (2012), ALA Alex Award (2013), Indies Choice Book Award for Adult Fiction (2013), Minnesota Book Award for Novel & Short Story (2013) I stopped reading this book on page 34. Simply put (appropriately speaking), the writing of the story was substandard. There were just too many short simple sentences (very often one right after the other) which began with a personal pronoun (like I, he, she, etc). Most of these sentences could have been combined and/or reworked to make the story more readable. Frankly, it was like reading a book written by someone in Junior High. I can't comment on the story itself. But the reading experience was not enjoyable." See Review |
