David and Goliath: Underdog...

"Lots of food for thought on how we perceive a disadvantage (it could actually be an advantage, if we only knew). Being an underdog or a misfit frees us to try things no one else dreamt of. Dream a little. Then believe it. Then do it. Being bigger, stronger, richer is not always in our competition's (or our's) best interest.

"When we see the giant, why do we automatically assume the battle is his for the winning? And what does it take to be that person who doesn't accept the conventional order of thins as a given...""

"Be patient with this book and it'll give back to you. I started out feeling the writing was sensationalist...and then I read James Altucher's blog at http://www.jamesaltucher.com and realized he just wrote what we all thought. Pay particular attention to the chapter on the God Hormone.

Let me know if you feel more resolved (and just laughed out aloud)) once you're done reading. I did."

"I had to read this book twice before beginning to think that I maybe understood 5% of what it was trying to tell me. I'm still not sure about the remaining 95% but I can't remember the last time I thought so hard while reading a book."

Lean In: Women, Work, and t...

"I don't necessarily agree with Sheryl nor do I believe a successful, professional woman needs to be a wallflower. That said, this books has given way to open discussion about gender bias in the workplace - something we've always been afraid to acknowledge and talk about. And it acknowledges that women are often our own worst enemy at work, a well known (albeit counterintuitive) phenom. It's also made it ok to be a feminist. I tend to ignore gender entirely so it was eye-opening for me to read about how women are often perceived by others when they negotiate, are assertive, successful etc. Read it even if you don't agree. Very thought-provoking and hopefully will pave the way for our daughters. Well done."

The Prophet

"I had a classical (ish) education growing up, but for all that, there are some big gaps in my reading. I finally got around to reading The Prophet this year. I'm not an overly philosophical or spiritual person, yet I was blown away by the simple, digestible ideas in this book, in particular the sections on Giving...

"You often say, 'I would give, but only to the deserving.'
The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks i your pasture. They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish. Surely he who is worthy to receive his days and his nights is worthy of all else from you."

...Work...
"For if you bake bread with indifference. you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man's hunger. And if you grudge the crushing of the grapes, your grudge distills a poison in the wine"

..., and Freedom.
"Ay, in the grove of the temple and in the shadow of the citadel I have seen the freest among you wear their freedom as a yoke and a handcuff. And my heart bled within me; for you can only be free when even the desire of seeking freedom becomes a harness to you, and when you cease to speak of freedom as a goal and a fulfillment""
