"Goode juggles themes of sexuality AND race AND religion (and hip-hop too!). Totally jealous of how freaking awesome these girls are."

"Very sweet, very utopic (a school where the star football player is a totally fabulous diva lady? Never thought I'd want to go back to high school, but sign me up!). Amazing to read a YA book where the gay main character is so comfortable with who he is. Even more amazing? This book was published in 2003."

"A younger-grade series starring two awkward, quirky, and super adorable bffs, one of whose parents happen to both be dads. The amazing thing about the first volume in "The Popularity Papers" is how seamlessly Julie's two fathers are woven into the story (their story is somewhat more developed in a later volume). That and the fact that this series is totally appropriate for kids as young as late elementary school--and there aren't a whole ton of juvenile books featuring gay characters."

"Rumor has it, Brown experienced resistance from a particular publisher who wanted the gay character to be rewritten as straight. Brown's response? To find a different publisher. We haven't read this one yet (it hasn't been published yet!), but WAY TO GO, Rachel Brown! Totally supporting this one."

"It's not the main character who's gay, but this one's worth a read. Hilarious and utterly heartbreaking."

"Great story but even greater cover. YA book covers are chock full of hormone-driven straight teens making out; it's about time we acknowledge that two dudes or two girls kissing is just as normal and beautiful (unless, you know, PDA isn't your thing). "
