"The protagonist has PTSD and is trying to raise his son and protect his family in a post-collapse Middle America. The novel is fiction, but the character is based on the author's real-life Vietnam-veteran uncle's experiences. The protagonist is driven by a sense of moral obligation, but can never quite overcome his PTSD to achieve goodness. Written in such stunning, poetic language that you won't be able to put the book down."
