Neptune's Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal

"Simply one of the best books on the naval history of the Second World War. A torrent of fact and analysis written with compelling prose. One thing I learned was the reason that Nimitz didn't use the older battlewagons (many of which survived Pearl Harbor) as a surface fleet against the IJN. Simply it was because he did not have the logistics in terms of oilers to send them to the South Pacific. For me that was reason enough to have read the book but there is much more.
