pml I've always liked Dragonsong better than Dragonflight. But that's at least partly because I read the former before the latter.

Sarahmarie I read that, and the Atwood, so long ago. I didn't know most of the books on the list, I had to stretch to find even this many to vote for. Is most sci fi written by men?

pml Most 'recognized' sci-fi is.
There's been quite a furor in recent years about why the women sci-fi authors are not getting awards or not even having their books recognized as 'being' sci-fi because they were written by women. And then there's how they're treated at cons by the male authors. I think it was last year that the official sci-fi author organization's newsletter (can't recall the official name) issued a formal apology because of rampant misogyny in a regular column by 2 male authors.
I've read quite a few blogs by female sci-fi authors who either cancelled their membership or refused to ever join in the first place.

pml I recall reading the Atwood ages ago (early 90's), and really not liking it much. Well written, interesting, but not something I ever want to re-read.
There's alot of authors on this list I need to read, especially the Connie Willis. Jo Walton had some good things to say about her time travel books (All Clear, etc.). And I want to check out C.J. Cherryh at some point.
I'm surprised Sharon Lee's Liaden book series isn't on here. I really liked her Theo Waitley subseries (begins with Fledgling, available free on kindle last time I looked). Lately I've been reading Chris Moriarty's Spin trilogy, also a Jo Walton recommend & very very good. I just began her children fantasy book The Inquisitor's Apprentice because I didn't want to leave her writing after finishing off Spin.
My favorite book read in 2013 is on here, The Best of All Possible Worlds. But I'll write you about that another time.

pml I've been trying to find the postings I originally read on female authors in the sci-fi community, but have so far come up empty (I'll update if I find them).
But here's a couple of Andrea K. Höst's posts:
