"It's a magical book I can't deconstruct to find how it works. Over and over I've read several chapters, trying to figure out how he could pull conflicting feelings out of me, the reader, and couldn't find it. Beyond that, Steinbeck was such a horrible writer when he was young, his friends held by the heels outside a second story window, threatening to drop him to his death if he shoved one more of his horrid stories down their throat. They weren't kidding, and neither was he: he never stopped perfecting his craft.
