I liked the movie better as I got so mad at him in the book. I sure was NOT bored.

I think getting frustrated with Stevens is all part of it; there comes a turning point, though, where the frustration turns to pity. I am so glad that you have read it too.
Yes, I did pity him too much. It made me too sad that he was continuing to waste his life.
