The Neverending Story
by
"This, along with Princess Bride, Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal, were films on eternal repeat at my house as a child. When I was finally able to purchase a copy of the book, I wore through multiple copies of it as well. One of these days, I need to get another copy in the original German."

Lessons in Taxidermy: A Compendium of Safety and Danger (Punk Planet Books)

"Found this in college, and really helped me reframe life with a chronic illness in an understandable (and livable) way. It was a real turning point."

Sophie's World: A Novel about the History of Philosophy
by
"I found a well-loved, annotated copy of this in the used book bin when buying textbooks for my first semester at college. I think I lost more sleep reading and reflecting on this novel than I did actually studying that year."

Snow Crash
by
"Read this in sixth or seventh grade, which made me a real hit with all the gamer boys that hung out at the RPG shop downtown. This was my first foray into scifi novels, and FAR from my last..."

"Saw the movie as a kid, and immediately had to read the book, which was even better than the film. Both are still among my top picks of all time."

The Moon Is Always Female: Poems

New Poems

"DIscovered Rilke in high school when looking for a copy of All's Quiet on the Western Front for an AP English class (mixed him up with Erich Maria Remarque.) A very happy mixup that was, as Rilke is one of my favorite poets out there."

The Pillars of the Earth (Kingsbridge, #1)

"Loaned to me by a friend in college, I've given away more copies of this book than I care to recollect. It's a dense, epic tale, and well worth the read."

Ender’s Game (Ender's Saga, #1)
by
"I read this around the same time I started reading Heinlein. I loved its directness and focus on the plot and characters, but when I went to learn more about Card as a person, was disgusted at his anti-woman and anti-gay views."

The Gift of Fear: and Other Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence
by
"Another book I give away left and right. de Becker discusses differentiating between fear (good) and panic/anxiety (bad); how to recognize toxic personalities and manipulators; as well as trusting our intuition as much safer ways to conduct ourselves in modern society. I find this especially useful as a woman, but everyone can find value in this book."

To Sail Beyond the Sunset
by
"Given to me in middle school by my best friend at the time. I really enjoyed his writing style and it was my first introduction to ethical non-monogamy, but I have real issues with his rather sexist depictions of women in most of his literary works. Unfortunately, I didn't understand those for what they were until years later; early on, some of the dialogue or other writing just made me vaguely uncomfortable and I couldn't articulate why. I'd still put it on here for nostalgia's sake, though."

Schott's Original Miscellany
by
"All of the Schott's Miscellany books, really. He used to put one out every year, though it's slowed down the last few. I'm a huuuge fan of trivia, and these make great random reads when I only have a few minutes here or there."
