I'm not, Brian--seems like the list is more about books featuring a multicultural perspective, which is what I was picking up on. I loved Okey Ndibe's debut (although I gather this forthcoming one was actually written first), and just read a fierce Kirsten Valdez Quade story from The New Yorker that Kyle Minor had championed, and didn't realize she had a collection on the way.

Ha, gotcha. In a class once, I was giving a presentation on Erdrich and started "As a Native American writer, I find that Erdrich blah blah blah." For the next couple of minutes, my classmates looked a little baffled, and finally someone said, "Tim, I didn't know you were Native American."

Kamakana Tim, i am a reader 'of colour', i would suggest that as many lists expanding reading material from our dominant 'western' culture are worthwhile. thanks for putting it up. i read only in english, i live in canada, but my own reading is about %35 translations, thus read as much world literature as possible. look on my lists if you are interested.

Agreed...I don't hit anywhere near 35% but do make a conscious effort to read in translation. Been on an Aira tear lately and wanting to gulp down everything of his that's been brought into English; he's the kind of writer who might make me go back to taking Spanish. Anyway, thanks--I'll check out your lists.
