The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics
by
"Story of UW crew team From Next 5 librarian:focuses on the University of Washington's men's rowing team, and their quest to make the Olympic team for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Brown, however, manages to fold in so much more detail on the Seattle of that era! Parallel to the story of the team, he tells the personal history of one of its members, Joe Rantz, and his life growing up on the Olympic Peninsula and Idaho, so the reader really gets the sense of what this region was like from 1915-1935.

The Floor of Heaven: A True Tale of the Last Frontier & the Yukon Gold Rush
by
"Not sure if this works here, but I do know the Yukon Gold rush was a critical factor in establishing Seattle - Nordstrom and Bartell both were founded during this time because Seattle was the last American city before crossing the Canadian border. The Canadians required prospectors to cross the border with a minimum of equipment for survival in the harsh environment of the Yukon."

The Curve of Time: The Classic Memoir of a Woman and Her Children Who Explored the Coastal Waters of the Pacific Northwest
by
"This book takes place up in BC, but is an unforgettable read. I read it on our annual summer cruise to the San Juans/Gulf Islands. I was feeling whiney that day about the lack of creature comforts but was brought up short by this woman, her five kids and her pioneer spirit (dinner was caught with a bent pin; during one fishing event, she had to rescue her children from a bear)"

Truth Like the Sun
by
"From Next 5 librarian: features a storyline which jumps from 2001 Seattle to the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. In a review, Library Journal wrote that "Lynch uses the World's Fair effectively as an entertaining atmosphere, introducing futurist thinking and bedazzling technologies, while illustrating the concealed, darker political moves that often push a city forward." Lynch, a former reporter for both the Seattle Times and the Oregonian, has written a number of novels set Seattle and the Pacific Northwest that are worth checking out (The Highest Tide would be another good place to start)."
