When Doctors Don't Listen: ...

"The art of diagnosis is being lost as medical schools lose focus on history taking skills. Not only is the history one of the most helpful (if not the most) tools in making an accurate diagnosis, but it requires special attention as many physicians are lacking in the skills necessary for interacting with patients compassionately in addition to managing bias. This is a must read book for any physician, current medical student, and anyone who is considering a career in medicine.
As a last note, the reason some patients may seek 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th opinion is because of the misapplication of cookbook medicine and the way in which it teaches us to take a too narrowly focused patient history and rely too heavily on tests that can be unreliable at best."

"A great look on what residency is like. While things have changed, such as restrictions on hours worked and more humane treatment of residents, a lot of the experience in the book still holds true. An *absolute* must read for anyone considering medical school (ask yourself the hard questions) or those in medical school and residency. "
