Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1)
by
"THE. EFFING. MOTHER. Also, how Paige was just used as a plot device (and her entire plotline, TBH) turned my stomach."

Say What You Will
by
"I hate to add this book because I think that for the most part, it does do a fair job of describing cerebral palsy. HOWEVER, at the same time, I didn't feel like it respected people with OCD. Also, the drama element relating to the disabilities was quite strong, which for some might be offensive."

The Fault in Our Stars
by
"Terminal illness of c. & I don't mean to say this is necessarily the worst offender - I just can't see how emotional manipulation and respect could both be present at the same time."

Jane Eyre

"Self-explanatory, really. I have yet to read WIDE SARGASSO SEA, but it sounds interesting enough to be mentioned on here."

Splintered (Splintered, #1)
by
"Disclaimer: I have no interest in reading this book. If you're curious, read the one-star reviews and what they say about the treatment of mental illness."

(W)hole
by
"I'm sure there's no malicious intent behind this book, but the first paragraph alone is kinda enough to make any physically disabled person VERY uncomfortable, so if that's you, you might want to reconsider reading it."

Made You Up
by
"Such a pity that I have to add this one, but really couldn't relate to the way the MC's illness was described."

Veronika Decides to Die
by
"I do realize others might think this is just a lovely, inspirational piece, but I have personally never felt as offended/violated as after reading it. Exploitative doesn't begin to cover how it presents suicidal depression."

Every Last Word
by
"Again a book I haven't actually read (but might if my library ever gets a copy). Hovewer, I have heard it presents "severe" OCD in a really iffy, sugary way. MC basically gets a HEA because of a POETRY GROUP/self-realization."

Jellicle Girl
by
"Not strongly terrible really, but kind of sends treatment-negative messages through a disabled character. As in, better to die than to depend on other people. I guess it's done in a somewhat emotionally realistic way, but, really?"

The Adoration of Jenna Fox (Jenna Fox Chronicles, #1)
by
"Lightreads (who BTW has lots of intersting reviews discussing disability) makes a good point about this one, so quote: "these narratives about how far science should or shouldn’t go are, when you scrape away everything else, just shittily disguised exercises in [...] body xenophobia. I mean look, these are books about reconstructed bodies and reconstituted physical and neurological lives, and they’re all, “but what if I’m not huuuuuuman anymore, weep wail.” It’s disability anxiety dressed up pretty." Still, I really liked this one, so I'm not saying people shouldn't give it a shot if interested."

Where'd You Go, Bernadette
by
"Bernadette's illnesses (depression and anxiety of the kind that leaves her bound to a small area of her home) are twisted into simple eccentricies the moment the narrative decides to be on her side and portray her as human. Consequences involve extreme treatment-negativity, stigmatizing, and condescending remarks about people not wealthy enough to pull similar tricks. Why? Because if she's ill, she cannot ever be a decent/beloved mother/wife - so of course she has to be not ill!!!!!"
