Snow Crash
by
"It's got an insane amount of dystopian future porn, but then it goes off on mind viruses and linguistics in a way that is completely unique and compelling.

It's typical Neal Stephenson in that he suddenly realizes he has to wrap things up at some point, but it's (to my mind) one of the classic cyberpunk/dystopian sci-fi novels." See Review |

The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer
by
"I really enjoyed the fact that, while completely futuristic, this book ignores many of the standard tropes of dystopian technology and instead focuses on nano tech and the reorganization of society. It ignores the standard virtual reality and future computing visions of most dystopian books and goes off in a different, but fascinating, direction.

Like all Neal Stephenson books, he does veer off and go nuts at the end, but that's under the definition of "Neal Stephenson", so whatever." See Review |

The Stand
by
"The Stand is one of the classic apocalypse books of all time. It has its problems, and at times it feels like two different books, but it's just fun to read. When Stephen King is good, he's very good. This one has way more good than bad."

1984
by
"I like this one primarily not because it's such a great book (although it is), but because it rings true in post-9/11 America and Britain. We've sacrificed our souls for a little security theater, and compliance and conformity are required. This really is where we're headed fast, even if the details differ significantly."
