The transmutation of Ling
by
"Although this is a third-person narrative, the conversations between the central character, Kai Lung, and those he meets during his itinerant wanderings are written in what might best be described as imaginary scholarly Mandarin, but rendered in ornate English -- language that's high flown, oblique, courtly in the extreme, and sneak-up-on-you droll. As one admirer put it, "Set in the lush atmosphere of a China that never was, Kai Lung's adventures are related with humor and irony, his shrewdness and wisdom conveyed in euphemisms, paradoxes and parables."

Bridge of Birds (The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox, #1)
by
"Another novel in the 'chinoiserie' tradition. Hughart drew heavily from Chinese literary traditions (as did Bramah), permuting them into what might loosely be characterized as a fantasy novel. Hughart called the novel "a modern version of a classical form of Chinese novel." "

Topsy-Turvy
by
"The "Topsy" novels of A.P. Herbert, have one of the most unique voices in humorous fiction. Topsy is a somewhat addlepated flapper, but she's shrewd and adorable at the same time. Her breathless stream-of-conscious letters to her friend Trix are riotous commentaries on events of her time. "

Archy and Mehitabel
by
"Archy is a cockroad. Mehitabel is a carousing stray cat. At night Archy writes free-verse poetry on a manual typewriter, but he can only jump on one key at a time, so there are no caps. "

The Purple Cloud
by
"The world is ending. A mysterious purple cloud descends, and it's not altogether clear what is happening, but the narrator is definitely Losing It. Lush turn-of-the-century prose combined with existential horror. Edgy and avant-garde for 1901, that's for sure. "
