Who did you hate in Human Bondage? I read it when I was 16 so don't remember much except the woman had a green cast to her skin which I thought was very odd.

For me, it was ponderous. The story was too contrived and the characters were wholly unlikable. Plus, I don't care for the author, S. Maugham. Now that I'm thinking about it again, it's probably only worthy of one star, or less. Terrible. (I don't recall anything about a woman w/green skin, but if it was the main character she might as well have had it - she was awful.)I hope you're well, A. Keep sending me all your polls, lists, etc. I like knowing you're still around, and kicking.
It was required reading for me in high school so I remember it more than many books. He was the main character and a doctor with a damaged foot maybe like Lord Byron.....not sure. He fell in love with this awful waitress who was very mean to him. I was amazed he would even look at her. She lead him a merry chase. We went to Seattle to see my sister in hospice. She was holding up well and very competitive with me her close sibling so I was glad to see she had the energy to be competitive. It was a hard trip overall but the weather was kind to us except for the winds in WY which were horrible. How was your Christmas?
The main guy (I forget his name) had what they used to call a club foot, a deformity you were born with. I think when that's detected now they fix it at birth. The magic of modern medicine. Christmas was good, only time seems to fly past with such rapidity these days. But as our old Ben Franklin so wisely said, "Time lost can never be found again." So I'm trying not to lose any more...
So sorry about your sister, A. Life is hard, truly. I'm just grateful I'm so close - both geographically and otherwise - to my daughter and her family now. It's a blessing.
Keep in touch, as always.
Pat
