Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West
by
"Why? Really, have you read it? I think the only reason it is not in the top 10 is because it is not a mandatory high school read. This is not about some futuristic dystopian world, but something that actually happened. The effects are still being strongly felt today."

The Grapes of Wrath
by
"The cogs of society grind, and there is nothing the 'little guy' can do to stop or alter what is going on. This was true in 1929, and is true today... but on even a larger scale, While not futuristic dystopian, is sure is mind-bendingly real... and really depressing because we have not overcome this dilemma, only further entrenched it."

The Book Thief

"Best written WWII German-Jew story... by far! While Anne Frank and Night may be non-fiction, they are not nearly as well written as this. This is not about some futuristic dystopian world, but something that actually happened. "

The Diary of a Young Girl
by
"Other than the obvious reasons, it is because the families were betrayed. Not any time during the occupation, but on the VERY LAST DAY. So close and only to be betrayed by a fellow 'human'."
