"The drowned men, known as "ahl-e gharq," or the submarinians, are believed to
inhabit the sea with the sea sprites and mermaids. The sprites and mermaids periodically come ashore to seek refuge from the evil spirit. To do this they rely upon the women of Jofreh who lend them their bodies and themselves undergo a metamorphosis.
