Ella Enchanted (Ella Enchanted, #1)
by
"Very cleverly written. I enjoyed this one as a retelling in that I didn't even realize it was a retelling of Cinderella until halfway thru the book, which I think is a good thing since I came in not knowing it was a Cinderella story. I enjoyed Levine's twists to the tale from the curse to Ella's spunky personality to the sweet romance which springs between her and the prince. A great story!"

The Shadow of the Bear (A Fairy Tale Retold #1)
by
"This is one of my favorite fairy tale retellings, partly because the fairy tale itself is not commonly known, but also because it sets up the mood for this book as well as the other two in the Snow White and Rose Red Trilogy, that of seeing adventure, wonder, and heroism as things belonging not just to fairy tales but to be taken up even in our mundane everyday world. Doman does a great job in portraying the message that she believes that the authors of the tale were seeking to show their audience. The characters are sweet, clever, and endearing. I also enjoyed the Catholic atmosphere to the book and the inclusion of Chesterton, a great defender of fairy tales, Christianity, and true humanity. Her allusions to other works of literature were also appreciated! "

Waking Rose (A Fairy Tale Retold #3)
by
"Fast paced, wonderful characters, an intriguing mystery, true love! A great conclusion to the Snow White and Rose Red Trilogy, begun with The Shadow of the Bear. This book was the favorite of the three, partly because of my partiality for the hero and heroine, but also because of the agility with which Doman weaves and reconstructs the tale, with modern day knights and ladies who are valiant and pure, a villainous archenemy, and terrible dragons to defeat! A wonderful book, definitely in my top ten!"

Black as Night (A Fairy Tale Retold #2)
by
"This is the second in the Snow White and Rose Red Trilogy by Regina Doman. This novel is far darker than the first, which I enjoyed, but the age level might be a little higher for reading the sequel. I enjoyed the suspense and the mystery as the identity of the evil queen is slowly disclosed. I also appreciated how Doman lets us get to know the prince's side of the story as well as that of the princess. The seven dwarves as seven friars was enjoyed immensely. A fantastic climax and a beautiful happily ever after."
