In My Mosque
by
"Great for Islamic Heritage Month. All the students *loved* the illustrations. Arab-speaking students were very excited to see the familiar phrases and cultural elements shown in this book, and it opened up the floor for students to share more information about their religion and culture during our book discussion time, which is exactly what we want in a heritage month book."

Nicky & Vera: A Quiet Hero of the Holocaust and the Children He Rescued
by
"I liked this one for grade 4 students during Holocaust Education Month. Since I'm a librarian and not a teacher, I had to gauge their knowledge of WWII before reading.

Some didn't remember much about it, while others were more familiar. To make this book more accessible for everyone, I gave a refresher on basic information about WWII, some definitions of terms (like holocaust), and explained where Prague was on a map. There were no issues understanding the story and they enjoyed the illustrations. The students were interested in talking about the book afterward, expressing sadness for the lives lost but happiness and appreciation that Nicholas was able to help people. More than anything they seemed especially intrigued that this picture book portrays a true story. I think this was a good introduction to the sorts of things that happened during WWII." See Review |

by
"This was my choice for the week of Diwali 2022.
Sarah
added it
Students loved the Diwali decorations in the book and found the lights mesmerizing. Many of the students enjoyed learning about the origins of Diwali - the story about overcoming evil captured their imaginations. The author's note at the end also answered a lot of questions students originally had about the Festival of Lights." See Review |
