I've never heard of of Swallows and Amazons.

You would be in for a treat to read - actually there is a series, Swallows and Amazons being the first, by Arthur Ransome. They're British, probably from the '30's or 40's. Truly delightful - four children in the Lakes District of England spending the summer sailing and their adventures.
