Dune (Dune #1)

"Because its a Sci-fi classic. When Frank Herbert wrote this book, it took him years, and you can really see the effort he put in just by the amount of detail in this book, especially when you think about the geographic, political, economic, religious, and historical aspects of Dune and all other related planets. Every detail intertwines itself, and its as absorbing a read as any saga of the history of the human race. Just looking at the "spice" alone, you can see how simple and complex the book portrays the power plays are for the control of Spice. Power plays are always a constant, but if you look deeper, as the book does, you get mired by how interrelated everything is to everything else. "
