I'm curious how these are chosen, are the selections truly random or is there some methodology behind them?

Kim and I choose them based on what we think members will want to read. Here's how these were chosen:

The Drowning Girl - Won Tiptree and Bram Stoker Awards, Nominated for Locus, Nebula, Shirley Jackson, Mythopoeia, British Fantasy Award, and World Fantasy Award
The Thousand Names - has been in polls four times previously and ranked 4, 2, 5, 2
Thief's Magic - this one is just popular right now
Masks and Shadows - is on the 2016 Locus Recommended Reading List, which is their version of a short list
Everfair - recently nominated for the Nebula and members expressed an interest in reading it when it was discussed the Nebula Nominees thread
