George P. I've read just 4 of these (Wind-Up Bird, Fine Balance, Of Human Bondage and Moby Dick).
I've struggled a bit to choose among 1Q84, Magic Mountain or Our Mutual Friend. Probably none of these will win, but 1Q84 probably has the best chance of the three so I'll go with that.

George, I can get behind magic mountain or Our Mutual friend. So gay, I’ve read most of the leading books.

Tatjana JP I'll wait for a while and if there is no chance The Magic Mountain will win I will change my vote. I would love to read 1Q84 or Of Human Bondage, but am I fine with all books voted so far, except Fine Balance, which I've read.

I would also be very happy with Magic Mountain.

Chinook It’s a bit jarring to see gay used as a synonym for stupid here.

Could it be a typo ?

The traditional meaning of gay is lighthearted and happy so I figured that was what she meant

Chinook Sadly, it doesn’t seem like that reading makes much sense. The term gay was used on many a playground growing up as a slur and as such there is a use of the word that basically means that something is stupid. It’s a really hurtful term, IMO.

The gay is typo error that my program put in there. I think I was going for Okay.

message 12: by Kristel (new)

Because we take words and make them mean something they never were meant to mean does not make them that. Gay mean happy and carefree. The newer meanings are just that, newer meanings. I’ve heard kids use it to mean stupid. When I was a kid we had a whole bunch of other misuses of words. It’s a thing that happens and now with the emphasis on not bullying perhaps it is happening less, but I doubt it. My use of the word was purely a error on my keyboarding part.

Chinook I did think long and hard before making a comment here. I’m sure I’m in the minority of being part of the LGBTQ+ community within this group and it’s always awkward to ask people to look at how they use language. This particular usage is not uncommon, but coming across it in a context where I wasn’t expecting it was really jarring. It would be far easier to have let it pass without any comment, but if I had done so I’d likely sour over time in terms of participating here, because I’d have to be on guard all the time, which is super exhausting. It seemed better to just comment and hope the comment was well received.

I’m glad to hear it was a typo. But please know that once a word is commonly used as a slur, you can’t just say that the word doesn’t mean that and have the problem go away.

I completely understand. And you can tell it was not meant but when people respond this way to me, they are also saying derogatory things about me. They are forming judgements that I am a bad person cause I used gay in error. My feelings are also hurt and I could also respond by not wanting to be here where people think unkindly of me. So I get it. Gay is not a bad word, but people using the word to hurt are the problem. I never meant to hurt you. I am happy you are here at Reading 1001 and hope you take my explanation to heart. No disrespect was ever meant. It didn’t even fit in the sentence. I am sorry that I didn’t see the problem sooner. Auto correct is not always a friend.

message 15: by Chinook (new)

Chinook Thanks, Kristel. It’s nice to be able to bring up a problem and have it resolved so easily and without rancor.

Yes, and if this ever happens again and I don’t seem to be responding, please send me a PM as I feel really bad that this didn’t get caught sooner.

Chinook Absolutely!

George P. Only six books have more than 2 votes with just a few days left to vote. What do we do for a tie? Run-off? I'm hoping 1Q84 will win.

We will have a second round of voting, shorter time though.

message 20: by George P. (new)

George P. I'd like to make a motion that all (7) of the books that got votes but weren't chosen be included in next year's poll (unless they are chosen for a monthly read in the interim).
