The upcoming Netflix series Shadow & Bone is based on The Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo.
The majority of the Grisha fandom hates the H of the series, Mal Orestev, and loves the villain The Darkling played by Ben Barnes
.
Do you think they'll make changes to the story to redeem The Darkling and make Mal a likable character? Are you going to watch?

I haven't read the books.
I don't watch Netflix series.
They won't fix the problems, but I'll watch anyway.
They might or not fix the problems, maybe I will watch.
Who cares for Mal and the Darkling? Nikolai forever.
They won't fix the problems. I'm not going to watch.

They will fix the problems, but still I'm not interested.

I never finished the trilogy. I can't remember who was supposed to be H, but for me the male characters were okay. I had more problems with h, she was so clingy.

I hope so, I felt Bardugo manipulated the relationship to avoid criticism and made the Darkling act out of character in an effort not to have young girls swooning over the villain.

She's annoying. Are you watching?

Not likely.

Not likely.

Not a fan of the Darkling or Mal. But if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick Baghra.

I agree with you. However, I am fascinated by Ben Barnes so I may be an addition to the Darkling fan club after I watch. :D

My problem is there are very few books I have read that I can watch adaptions of, it's like they're raining all over my perfectly constructed illusionary world with their own representations - except sci-fi or high fantasy, those can be amazing or even better on screen.

She totally did!!! Like he was so respectful of Alina's privacy at first and so proud. He wouldn't ever impersonated that idiot Mal. And he was respecful of Bagrha too. Those young adult authors just pull "Tamlins" to stay politically correct and that's why YA is not cool anymore.

He's a hottie.

What do you think? Is it worth it putting in the hours to get through the books before tacking the show? I'll probably watch the pilot of the series either way, because what other way is there to gauge whether a new show is to your liking or not?

Can I ask why? Not trolling, genuinely curios."
I don't think he ever did anything wrong but support Alina and worry about her, what being "worshipped" was doing to her. And I agreed with him. To me, if she had continued, I think it was turning her into a female version of The Darkling. I didn't like her very much for a good portion of that part of the series. I know a lot of my friends considered him a whiner, that he was just trying to "hold her back" because she was "ignoring him" but I didn't see it that way. I know a lot of that was because of Nikolai *who I did love*, because they shipped Alina & Nikolai so hard, LOL. 😂

I agree. I didn't like Alina for almost all the series. I don't understand the Darkling appeal, except that he's handsome and manipulative. Mal was okay but too selfless in regards to Alina. Out of all the men, Nikolai stands the greatest because he was practical and wasn't in love with Alina.
I'm just hoping the characters are fun.

There's no such thing as consensus, that's just a marketing ploy I never fall for. I don't like the bones trilogy but I know many people who do and I value their opinions more than the haters'. You should read shadow and bone, form your opinion and if by 50% you don't like it jump immediatly into Six of Crows, it's much better.

So "selfless" that he cheats on her.

I agree with you. Like Thanos or killmonger.

Umm, not to be trolly or anything, but didnt he get declared a traitor for her, willing to sacrifice his life for her, died for her and actually loved her. I am not sure a little hansy pansy demeans his sacrifice and 'selfless" nature

Six of crows is much better, I love the actors they cast as Darkling, Jesper, and Kaz. They're so hawt.

I do want to get trolly!!!
*TAKES BREATH*
didnt he get declared a traitor for her, many on the "good" side are declared traitors.
willing to sacrifice his life for her big fat deal! no more than she was willing for him and for the rest of Ravka while he was sabotaging in her worst moments and lives were lost because of his idiocy.
died for her and actually loved her That's the least a self-respecting reader expects from a male protagonist. Even in stupid YA there are male characters like Jem Camstairs and Will Herondale that sacrifice way more and without whining the entire trilogy. Alina is such a whiner, too, but at least she tried. I'm just repeating what the entire Tumblr community has said before. Mal is awful.

So "selfless" that he cheats on her."
ROFL
Best comeback ever K-chan!
Just a reminder: Everyone has different opinions and discussions can get heated, that's okay. What's not okay is to contest the person posting a different opinion. Make sure to contest the opinion you disagree with, not the person posting it.

Charming, roguish, "not impossible, just improbable" Nikolai was my favorite male character by far. Have no complaints about him.
