The upcoming Netflix series Shadow & Bone is based on The Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo.
The majority of the Grisha fandom hates the H of the series, Mal Orestev, and loves the villain The Darkling played by Ben Barnes Ben Barnes • by Ben Barnes .
Do you think they'll make changes to the story to redeem The Darkling and make Mal a likable character? Are you going to watch?

I haven't read the books.

Ekene Honestly, I feel like Netflix will put their own spin to the relationship. Also I’m team Nikolai

I never finished the trilogy. I can't remember who was supposed to be H, but for me the male characters were okay. I had more problems with h, she was so clingy.

I hope so, I felt Bardugo manipulated the relationship to avoid criticism and made the Darkling act out of character in an effort not to have young girls swooning over the villain.

Not likely.

message 6: by ~Jennifer~ (new)

~Jennifer~ I will watch the first two episodes to give it a chance. I only started the second in the trilogy and I been forcing myself to finish so I can read the spin-off which I am interested in. Normally a T.V. Series is never as good as the book, but since T.V. hardly follows what is written maybe it will better than the book in this case. As a side note I heard there’s going to be a T.V. Series based on A court of Thorns and Roses, I really hate that, I was disappointed that it wasn’t going to be a really great movie ( like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Hungry Games).

message 7: by Payal (new)

Payal Yes, planned on watching with waffles because Nina is Bae!

Not a fan of the Darkling or Mal. But if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick Baghra.

message 8: by Lisazj1 (new)

Lisazj1 I liked Mal myself. There was a part of the books where I didn't like Alina too much. I'm going to watch but if they redeem The Darkling at ALL, I'll definitely stop watching.

message 9: by Vicky (new)

Vicky I do hate Mal, but I don't feel as fascinated by the Darkling as most people. I hope they focus on the crows.

Payal Vicky wrote: "I do hate Mal, but I don't feel as fascinated by the Darkling as most people. I hope they focus on the crows."

I agree with you. However, I am fascinated by Ben Barnes so I may be an addition to the Darkling fan club after I watch. :D

message 11: by Viki (new)

Viki No way to know, they like putting their own spin on things from what I know but I am not so invested in the trilogy I would mind it, whatever the outcome.

My problem is there are very few books I have read that I can watch adaptions of, it's like they're raining all over my perfectly constructed illusionary world with their own representations - except sci-fi or high fantasy, those can be amazing or even better on screen.

AℳY♔Queen of Fat cats♔Ain't no lie Baby Byebyebye To fix it they would have to rewrite it completely. It was such a cool concept with so so many missed opportunities to show the volcras, the stag, the sea snake, and the bird as great concepts worthy to develop, instead of something for that whiny idiot Mal to kill. I don't know what's popular on Netflix but just watching the trailer I think it has 80% of chances of flopping. Only cool things are Ben barnes and the Crows cameos.

AℳY♔Queen of Fat cats♔Ain't no lie Baby Byebyebye So unless they make it truly sexy, gory and a volcra eats Mal and Alina I'm not watching. Other than some tik toks and a few youtube videos there's no hype for this and Netflix never renews series that don't produce them new subscribers.

Shouldn't we start a petition to Netflix to pick Kate Daniels?

She totally did!!! Like he was so respectful of Alina's privacy at first and so proud. He wouldn't ever impersonated that idiot Mal. And he was respecful of Bagrha too. Those young adult authors just pull "Tamlins" to stay politically correct and that's why YA is not cool anymore.

Cinnabelle listens I think a good villian believes he is the hero and his cause is just. I love complex heroes and villians. I read Shadow and Bone and decided not to read the other two books in the series because it was too predictable.

message 21: by Anto~mcbr (new)

Anto~mcbr Haven't read this series. The consensus seems to be that it isn't all that good, but with the show coming out and everyone talking about it, the fomo is real.

What do you think? Is it worth it putting in the hours to get through the books before tacking the show? I'll probably watch the pilot of the series either way, because what other way is there to gauge whether a new show is to your liking or not?

message 22: by Taylor (new)

Taylor I'm mostly in it for Kaz and Inej, although I'm mad that it looks like they're going to do Six of Crows and the Shadow and Bone series at the same time so we'll miss a ton of good little moments. The Darkling was a great character and Ben Barnes will do him justice but I'm not sure about everyone else.

I don't think he ever did anything wrong but support Alina and worry about her, what being "worshipped" was doing to her. And I agreed with him. To me, if she had continued, I think it was turning her into a female version of The Darkling. I didn't like her very much for a good portion of that part of the series. I know a lot of my friends considered him a whiner, that he was just trying to "hold her back" because she was "ignoring him" but I didn't see it that way. I know a lot of that was because of Nikolai *who I did love*, because they shipped Alina & Nikolai so hard, LOL. 😂

I agree. I didn't like Alina for almost all the series. I don't understand the Darkling appeal, except that he's handsome and manipulative. Mal was okay but too selfless in regards to Alina. Out of all the men, Nikolai stands the greatest because he was practical and wasn't in love with Alina.

I'm just hoping the characters are fun.

There's no such thing as consensus, that's just a marketing ploy I never fall for. I don't like the bones trilogy but I know many people who do and I value their opinions more than the haters'. You should read shadow and bone, form your opinion and if by 50% you don't like it jump immediatly into Six of Crows, it's much better.

Six of crows is much better, I love the actors they cast as Darkling, Jesper, and Kaz. They're so hawt.

I do want to get trolly!!!
*TAKES BREATH*

didnt he get declared a traitor for her, many on the "good" side are declared traitors.
willing to sacrifice his life for her big fat deal! no more than she was willing for him and for the rest of Ravka while he was sabotaging in her worst moments and lives were lost because of his idiocy.
died for her and actually loved her That's the least a self-respecting reader expects from a male protagonist. Even in stupid YA there are male characters like Jem Camstairs and Will Herondale that sacrifice way more and without whining the entire trilogy. Alina is such a whiner, too, but at least she tried. I'm just repeating what the entire Tumblr community has said before. Mal is awful.

Just a reminder: Everyone has different opinions and discussions can get heated, that's okay. What's not okay is to contest the person posting a different opinion. Make sure to contest the opinion you disagree with, not the person posting it.

message 34: by Petra (new)

Petra Cross I'm not watching at all, apparently the director wants to make it all about Malina in season 2. That's the most insipid YA romance ever, I'd rather they had made it Maze runner style, the movie adaptation downplayed the Brenda Thomas Teresa triangle.

message 35: by Anto~mcbr (new)

Anto~mcbr Just finished reading the trilogy. Didn't think Mal was all that bad, but at times his and Alina's relationship got pretty toxic (particularly in book 2). Also, the Darkling hard core gaslighted Alina for a big part of this series. (view spoiler)

Charming, roguish, "not impossible, just improbable" Nikolai was my favorite male character by far. Have no complaints about him.
