Could I add another book to the list? I have not read any of these and would love to participate.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was published in 2008. These Goodreads Choice Awards are just for books published in 2009.
I can't vote for any of the books in any of the categories because I didn't read any of them! I read a lot of books but sadly, none of these.
The only one I've read is Catching Fire, so my vote is a little skewed, but it's a great book, only after reading it's prequel, The Hunger Games.
I enjoyed "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," but I certainly wouldn't put it on a best of list. The rest of these ... blech.
Probably because most of the people on goodreads (or at least the active ones) are in the young adult range (me included). I've read a couple of books on the list and I've heard of all the others so the poll isn't odd to me.
I haven't read any of these books and I really doubt I ever will. Obviously GR users skew young and with not the most elevated taste. (Sorry but let's just admit it.)
The lesson here is - the kids "get" how the site runs! ;-pDon't just list your books - when you finish one review it!!!! It will make the list next year AND we will all be better able to decide on new books to read!
BTW - Her Fearful Symmetry and The Lost Symbol are not YA or Vampire books! If you haven't read it Her Fearful Symmetry is a great book from the author of the Time Traveler's Wife.
I so agree. currently reading 'The elegance of the Hedgehog'- recommended by a friend and am interested in feedback from others.

nancy, i loved "the elegance of the Hedgehog" I thought it was beautifully written and not 'run of the mill' fiction.
For those that posted that they have not read any of these books, read "The Help". It was great...could not put it down!
Being a 'kid' as a lot of you put it, I've read a lot of these books. My vote is between City of Glass and the Last Olympian. Both really good, especially for YA books.
By the way - did any of you read The Gift of Rain -- or Cutting for Stone? They are both quite good. Also Sarah Vowel's The Wordy Shipmates.

Man I there are to many good books. I loved Catching Fire and the Last Olympian, but City of Glass was really good too!

Did Goodreads readers like the dreadful Lost Symbol and ignore The Lacuna...The Gargoyle...The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane...? Puhleeeese...I thought Goodreads was a place where readers of REAL books met.
I read a lot of really good books in 2009 - none of them made it to your list. Sorry can't vote on the titles you have listed - wouldn't be "honest". None of them truly qualify as "Best Book of 2009". I agree with rides3wheels and lobstergirl............
Of the books you've listed I would choose the Last Olympians. The series seems to have inspired many young people to read (don't think it's as good as Harry Potter though.Where do these lists come from? I think it might be more interesting just to have those who want to share what was their particular favorite read of the year in selected categories.
I absolutely loved Catching Fire!If you haven't read The Hunger Game and Catching Fire you really should- they will make you stop and think. Sometimes fiction isn't so unrealistic, what if...?
Susanna wrote: "Haven't read any of these. My choice would be South of Broad, by Pat Conroy."I agree. South of broad was my favorite this year. Who picks these books anyway, I read a lot all kinds of genres and I haven't heard of any of these.
I would vote for South of Broad, as well. It was a stunning quilt of characters lives intertwined with the history of Charleston, and what being from Charleston means. Rich, fully developed characters. Should have been on the list.
The only decent books up there are Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and The Last Olympian! And why is The Lost Symbol there?
I have read & liked several of the books listed, but not all of them. I will vote on one of the choices given. I think, in my humble opinion, that you should be able to choose any book you want, not be limited to the choices given. I am amazed that The Lost Symbol made it on the list as most of the reviews I read were not positive. It only has an average rating of 3.35. It's not a low rating, but not incredibly high either. How did you choose these books again?

It was recommended to me last year at this time and I would say it is probably one of my all-time favorites! I know most people wouldn't pick it up on their own so I have given it as a gift many times.
I am not a young adult and I loved Catching Fire! I know several other adults (some parents of young adults) who enjoyed it also. I am so glad there are so many great storytellers who are seriously engaging young people today.
I couldn't get through The Lost Symbol even though I loved his DiVinci Code and Angels and Demons. How about The Face Of Faith by Candy Wood Lindley. Marvelous spiritual non-fiction book. Carol
My all-time favorite this year was Sum: 40 Tales of the Afterlives. It was smart and creative and different
City of Glass, definitely. Catching Fire and The Last Olympian were great, but they can't compete with The Mortal Instruments. Most of these are in the young adult category, but people of all ages can read them. Technically, Harry Potter is children's fiction, but everyone likes Harry Potter, including adults.
