Herzl coolly explained that the conversion would be conditional upon the pope declaring a campaign against antisemitism. The Christian world would see an end to the Jews, but in return it would have to put an end to hating them. Herzl fantasized that the conversion ceremony would be held in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the heart of Vienna and be presided over by the pope himself.”
