“You have to fight, Vi,' Xaden whispers against my forehead as we move. 'You can hate me all you want when you wake up. You can scream, hit, throw your fucking daggers at me for all I care, but you have to live. You can't make me fall for you and then die. None of this is worth it without you.”

“Killing you wouldn’t be any trouble, Violence. It’s leaving you alive that seems to cause the majority of my trouble.”

    “Dragon relationships are absolutely incomprehensible.”
“Yeah? You should try a human one sometime. Just as vicious, but less fire.”

    “You're still looking.'
    ...
'You make it hard to look away.'
    ...
'I'm over here keeping my hands and memories to myself because you asked me to, and you're fucking me with your eyes. That's not playing fair.'
    ...
    'Told you to stop staring.'
    ...
'If you'd just man up and admit there's something between us, I would strip down to my skin so you could see every single inch of me. And once I had you begging, I'd drop down to my knees, undo those flight leathers you're wearing, and wrap my lips around-'

    Xaden chokes.

Every head in the dining hall turns his way, and Garrick pounds on his back until Xaden waves him off, taking a drink of his water.

I grin, which earns me about six looks of confusion from our table and one set of rolled eyes from Liam.

'You're going to be the death of me.”

“They’re accommodations for me. I’ve seen your memories. I’m not about to have you sticking daggers into my leg to climb up. Now let’s go.”

“I know. I made it my business to know everything there was to know about you the second I saw you on the parapet.'

'Because that's not creepy.' I let the coffee warm my freezing hands.

'Can't know how to ruin someone without understanding them first,' he says quietly.

I lift my gaze to find that his is already on me. 'And is that still your plan?' Mira's words have haunted me for two days.

    He flinches. 'No.'

'What changed?' Frustration tightens my grip on the mug. 'When exactly did you decide not to ruin me?'

'Maybe it was when I saw Oren holding a knife to your throat,' he says. 'Or maybe it was when I realised the bruises on your neck were fingerprints and wanted to kill them all over again just so I could do it slowly. Maybe it was the first time I recklessly kissed you or when I realised I'm fucked because I can't stop thinking about doing more than just kissing you.' My breath catches at his admission, but he just sighs, lets his head fall back against the wall. 'Does it even matter when, as long as it changed between us?'

'Don't do that,' I whisper, and he lifts his head again to hold my gaze.

'Do what? Tell you I can't get you out of my head? Or speak directly into yours?'

    'Either.”

“Fuck, that stubborn, feisty look always makes me want to kiss you.”
“And you say this now, where people will see if you actually do.”
“When did I ever give you the impression that I give a fuck what people think about me?”

“I thought you said kissing me was a mistake.”
“It was. I’m just teaching you that blades aren’t the only way to disarm an opponent. Tell me, Violence, are you disarmed?”

“Don't ever put your life at risk over something as trivial as talking to me again.' It's as low as a growl against my ear, sending a shiver down my spine.

'Next year is going to be so much fun,' I tease, walking forward and lacing my fingers with his so her follows.

'Liam will be here next year to make sure you're not doing asinine things,' he mutters.

'You're going to love getting his letters.”

“He turned to me then, his expression serious, the firelight playing over the perfect planes of his features. “I’ve spent my life searching for a way to make things right. You’re the first glimmer of hope I’ve had in a long time.”

“She smiled then, a small smile of such aching sadness that it was hard to look at. "You think I don't love my son," she said. "But I do." "It is because I love him that I will not let him put himself beyond redemption.”

“Maybe I should lie down on a table in the workroom and wait to see if he welds something to me.” “I think that’s the way most great love stories begin.”

“Scarlet and Wolf are saying gushy things in the galley," Iko said. "Normally I like gushy things, but its different when its real people. I prefer the net dramas.”

“Wolf, are you asking me to be ... your alpha female?"
    He hesitated.
Scarlet couldn't help it - she burst into laughter. "Oh - I'm sorry. That was mean. I know I shouldn't tease you about this."
Still grinning, she made to retract her hand, but he was suddenly gripping it, refusing to relinquish the touch. "You just look so scared, like I'm going to disappear any minute. We're stuck on a spaceship, Wolf. I'm not going anywhere."
His lips twitched, his nervousness beginning to ease away, though his hand stayed tense over hers.
"Alpha female," he murmured. "I sort of like that."
Beaming, Scarlet gave a mild shrug. "It could grow on me.”

“But I'm a wanted fugitive, like Cinder." Thorne continued. "They do realise I'm missing, don't they?"
    "Maybe they're grateful," Cinder muttered.”

“Kai neared his desk again, seeing that the fugitive's profile had been transferred to the screen. His frown deepened. Perhaps not dangerous, but young and inarguably good-looking. His prison photo showed him flippantly winking at the camera. Kai hated him immediately.”

“Let me guess,” Thorne said. “Breaking and entering?”
After a long silence of examining the retracting mechanism, the girl wrinkled her nose. “Two counts of treason, if you must know. And resisting arrest, and unlawful use of bioelectricity. Oh, and illegal immigration, but honestly, I think that's a little excessive.”

“Thorne blinked at her, then down at the sewage he could barely make out in the darkness. "Don't you have some tool in that fancy hand of yours that can get us across?"
Cinder glared, light-headed from her body's instinctively short breaths. "Oh, wow, how could I have forgotten about my grappling hook?”

“When she had gone, Thorne let out a low whistle. “I know, I know. She seems a little”—crossing his eyes, he swirled both fingers around his ears—“but it’s really part of her charm, once you get to know her.”

“Amusement touched the corner of his lips. "Animals love me."
"Oh, I'm sure they do," Scarlet said, beaming with fake encouragement. She shut the door before muttering, "What farm animals don't love a wolf?”

“I really am sorry for shooting you."
    "Are you?"
Her touch lingered as it reached the end of the bandage, checking that it was still securely tied. "What does that mean?"
"I suspect you would shoot me all over again if you thought it would help your grandmother."
She blinked up at him, almost surprised to discover how close they were standing. "I would," She said. "But that doesn't mean I wouldn't be sorry about it afterward.”

“Regarding Her Majesty, Queen Levana, has she or any of the Lunar court commented on the escape of the convict?"
Kai's jaw tensed. "Oh, she's had a thing or two to say about it.”

“He's not an animal," she said, focusing on the claw marks on the side of Wolf's face.
    "Are you sure?"
"I hate to agree with Thorne," said Cinder, "I mean, I really hate to agree with him, but he's right”
