“جاء زمن أبى الحسن الأشعرى مؤسس الاشعرية (الاشاعرة) , وقد كان فى الاصل تلميذًا لأحد كبار رجال المعتزلة وهو "الجبائى" , فسأل الأشعرى شيخه يومًا عن حكم إخوة ثلاثة (فى الاخرة) مات أحدهم مؤمنًا والثانى كافرًا والثالث مات طفلاً صغيرًا . فأجاب "الجبائى" وفقًا للاتجاه العام للمعتزلة ذوى النزعة العقلانية بأن المؤمن فى الجنة , والكافر فى النار , والطفل الى عدم لا هو فى الجنة ولا النار لأنة لم يكتب ثوابًا يدخل به الجنة ولا اقترف ذنوبًا يدخل بها النار !
فقال الأشعرى مامعناه : "وماذا لو قال هذا الطفل الأخير لربه , لو تركتنى حيًا فى الاض , لكنت قد اكتسبت ثوابًا أدخل به الجنة " , فقال الجبائى مامعناه : " سيقول له الله , إنة لو كان قد تركه مثلما يشتهى , لكان قد اقترف ذنوبًا استحق معها دخول النار , وقد رحمه الله بموتة صغيرًا " , فرد علية الاشعرى : " ساعتها سيقول الأخ الذى دخل النار لربه . لماذا يارب لم تمتنى صغيرًا وترحمنى من اقتراف الذنوب التى دخلت النار بسببها , مثما فعلت ياربى مع أخى الذى امته طفلاً "
ولما لم يجد (الجبائى) إجابة , احتقن , وصاح فى وجه أبى الحسن الأشعرى : "أنت مجنون " !”
