    “What's wrong?"
    I didn't say a word."
    Something's up. What is it?"
    Nothing."
    His head turned, gaze going to mine. "Yeah?"
    Yes."
    A snort and he returned to his bowl…”

    “Don't talk to the crazy kids. I longed to shout back that we weren't crazy. I'd mistaken her kid for a ghost, that's all.

    I wondered whether they had books about his sort of thing. Fifty Ways to Tell the Living from the Dead Before You Wind Up in a Padded Room. Yep, I'm sure the library carried that one.”

    "It was hot at the restaurant," I said. "So I rolled up my sleeves."
    "What?"

    I pushed my left one up, showing four bruises, dark as ink spots. Simon paled.
    "My aunt wanted to know what happened. When I wouldn't tell her, she tricked me into admitting it was a boy. She met Derek this morning and he was rude, so she decided it had to be him. I never confirmed it. If he's in trouble, it is not my fault. I had every right to tell someone and I didn't."
    "Okay, okay."
    He rubbed his mouth, still staring at my arm. "So he grabbed your arm. That's what it looks like. Right? He just grabbed harder than he thought."
    "He threw me across the room."

    Simon's eyes widened, then he lowered his lids to hide his surprise. "But he didn't mean to. If you saw how freaked out he was last night, you'd know that."
    "So that makes it okay? If I lose my temper and smack you, it's all right, because I didn't mean to, didn't plan to."
    "You don't understand. He just—"
    "She's right."
    Derek's voice preceded him around the corner.
    I shrank back. I couldn't help it. As I did, a look passed through Derek's eyes. Remorse? Guilt? He blinked it away.”

    “He pivoted, gaze following me as I crossed to the shower and turned on the cold water, so it would drown out our conversation without steaming up the room.
    Great," he muttered."Now they're going to think we're showering together. Maybe we can just tell them we were washing off the crawl space dirt and trying to conserve water.”

    “Simon: Anyone ever tell you your sense of timing really sucks?
    Derek: That's why I don't play the drums. Now what's up?”

    “I'm behind you." I spun to see Derek. "I can't win," he said. "You're as skittish as a kitten.”

    “Derek caught my arm again as I started to move--at this rate, it was going to be as sore as my injured one.
    "Dog," he said, jerking his chin toward the fenced yard. "It was inside earlier."
    Expecting to see a Doberman slavering at the fence, I followed his gaze to a little puff of white fur, the kind of dog women stick in their purses. It wasn't even barking, just staring at us, dancing in place.
    "Oh, my God! It's a killer Pomeranian." I glanced up at Derek. "It's a tough call, but I think you can take him.”

    “He had a newspaper rolled in his hand, bearing down on me like a puppy that had piddled on the carpet.
    "Bad Chloe,” I muttered.
    "What?”
    I’d forgotten his bionic hearing. “Bad Chloe.” I gestured at the rolled-up paper and put
    out my hand. “Get it over with.”

    “He balled up my discarded
    sweatshirt and put it against his shoulder.
    “Go on,” he said. “I don’t bite.”
    “And from what I hear, that’s a good thing.”
    He gave a rumbling chuckle. “Yeah, it is.”
    I leaned against his shoulder.”

    “You didn't answer my question. Are you all right?"

    I didn't do anything"

    Yeah. You did." He looked at me. "You did a lot"

    “And stop doing that,” he said. “Backing away, giving me that look.”
    Like you’re scaring me? Maybe you are.”
    He stepped back so fast he wobbled and caught himself, and the look on his face—It
    vanished in a second, the scowl returning.
    I’d never hurt you, Chloe. You should know—” He stopped. Paused. Then wheeled and
    started walking away. “Next time? Handle it yourself. I’m done taking care of you.”

    “When Liam stepped forward again, Derek's arm shot around me , a growl vibrating up from his stomach.
    Liam put his hand out toward me. When Derek tensed he pilled back, then did it again, testing his reaction, laughing when he got one, untill even Ramone started to laugh.
    "Check this out," Liam said. "I think the pup's got himself a mate. Isn't that the cutest thing?”

    “Depends on the dog. Big country dogs like these? Yeah. It's the fancy city ones that give me trouble. Overbred, Dad says. Makes them skittish and screws up their wiring. I had a Chihuahua attack me last year." He showed me a faint scar on his hand. "Took a good chunk out."
    I sputtered a laugh. "A Chihuahua?"
    "Hey, that thing was more vicious than a pit bull. I was at a park with Simon, kicking around a ball. All of a sudden, this little rat dog comes tearing out of nowhere, jumps up, and clamps down on my hand. Wouldn't let go. I'm shaking it, and the owner's yelling at me not to hurt little Tito. I finally get the dog off. I'm bleeding all over that place and the guy never even apologizes.”

    “It's me," a deep voice rumbled.
    The hands released me and I turned. There stood Derek, all six foot of him. Maybe it was just the thrill of seeing him, but he looked better than I remembered. His black hair was still lank, and his face was still dotted with acne. But he looked...better.
    ~~~~~
    Tori waited until Derek was gone, then shuddered. "Okay, Derek always weired me out, but the wolf man stuff is seriously creepy. Suits him, I suppose. A creepy power for a creepy guy."
    "I thought he looked better."
    She stared at me.
    "What? He does. Probably because he's starting his wolf changes and he's not stressed out about being in Lyle House. That must help."
    "You know what will really help? Shampoo. Deodorant - "
    I raised my hand to cut her off. "He smelled fine, so don't start that. I'm sure his wearing deodorant and - for once-it's working. As for showers, they're a little hard to come by on the street, and we won't look much better soon."
    "I'm just saying."
    "Do you think he doesn't know you're saying? News flash-he's not stupid.”
    “Tell her to be quiet, and she got louder. Tell her to stay back, and she pushed me into the line of fire. Tell her to watch for our pursuers, and she hovered at my shoulder instead. Open the door to listen, and she wanted to drag me back inside.
    Ah. The beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
    “I knew Derek didn't lack empathy—he couldn't forget what he'd done to that kid who attacked Simon. But it was like what he held some weird list of checks and balances, and if you got on the wrong side, like Tori had, he had no problem 'kicking you on the curb,' to face whatever fate waited.
    "No," I said.
    "It isn't up for negotiation. She's not coming."
    "Okay."
    I stood and brushed off my jeans. "Come on, Tori."
    When Simon rose, I thought he was going to stop me. Instead, he followed me to the door. Tori caught up, and we made it into the next room before Derek jogged out, catching my arm with a wrench that yanked me off my feet.
    I winced and peeled off his fingers. "Wrong one."
    He dropped my arm quickly, realizing he'd grabbed my injured one. A long minute of silence, then, "Fine." He turned to Tori. "Three conditions. One, whatever your problem is with Chloe, get over it. Go after her again, you're gone."
    "Understood,"
    Tori said.
    "Two, get over Simon. He's not interested."
    She flushed and snapped, "I think I've figured that out. And number three?"
    "Get over yourself."
    “She saw Derek and without so much as a hello, leaned to look behind him. "Where's Simon?"
    "He's—"
    "Is he okay? Why isn't he here?"
    She glared up at Derek. "Where'd you leave him?"
    "Passed out in an alley." Derek frowned in thought. "Not sure where, though ..."
    "He's kidding,"
    I said as Tori sputtered.
    "We need to get moving." Derek hooked a thumb as Tori while looking at me. " She's your responsibility."
    "Excuse me?"
    Tori said.
    Derek didn't even glance her way. "Make sure she keeps up. And shuts up."
    “You were just worried about me."
    An exhale, relieved that I had understood. "Yeah"
    I turned. "Because you think I'm worth it"
    He put his fingers under my chin. "I absolutely think your worth it."
    "But you don't think you are."
    His mouth opened. Shut.
    "That's what this is about, Derek. You won't let us worry about you because you don't think you're worth it. But I do. I absolutely do.”
    “So I was right, wasn't I? It's still you, even in wolf form.'
    He grunted.
    No sudden uncontrollable urges to go kill something?'
    He rolled his eyes.
    Hey, you're the one who was worried.' I paused. 'And I don't smell like dinner, right?'
    I got a real look for that one.
    “So," Simon said. "Looks like you and Derek are getting along again. What happened? Did he give you the look?"
    "Look?"
    "You know. The one that makes him look like a whipped puppy, and makes you feel like a jerk for doing the whipping."
    "Ah, that one. So it works on you, too?"
    He snorted. "It even works on Dad. We give in, we tell him it's okay, and the next thing you know, he's chewing up slippers again."
    I laughed.”
