Will I have to read the first one before I begin? Or can I pick up the thread?
I've actually never read the first book. I got this one as a gift and read it without knowing what happened in the first book (although I've seen the movie). I thought it was a pretty good "stand alone" book and I did not feel like I needed to read the first one to know what was going on. I'm not very big into vampire stories so I've never read any different book in the series, but Anne Rice is known as the queen of vampire books and I think any of her books would fit your request. Have a good one!
