As soon as I saw this recommendation request I thought "this is a job for Charles". Glad to see I wasn't wrong :)
I love the history of early industrial technology. The most enlightening idea of this book was that without the American Civil War, the management and civil engineering ability would never have existed to build this transportation network that opened-up the North American continent as quickly as was accomplished. On my list of things to read about is the Trans-Siberian railroad which had a similar, but different result in Russia.
