It's not a ghost/gothic novel in the classical sense of the term, but a book about grief, loneliness and memory with an underlying sense of menace, especially in the chapters that deal with the (unreliable?)narrator's past in Japan. I really enjoyed the novel, even though it left me a bit confused and disturbed in the end.
