Thanks for the recommendation, Kim! I'm already planning to read one of Dessen's books but I want to read her books in order they were published because I heard that older characters have guest appearances in other books of hers. I debated reading out of order but I ended up deciding that I'll start with That Summer because I want to be able to be like "Ah! That's X from book Z!" and not be spoiled for a book. Just little things are spoilers to me, so even if it's predictable character 1 and character 2 will get together in a book, it still feels like I've been spoiled (I'm just weird like that, haha).
No, I completely understand. I want to go back and read her other books, but I read them out of order. Along for the Ride was my first Dessen - mostly because there weren't many available in Australia and I started reading them before I started using Book Depository for all the non-Aussie available books.
She does have a habit of bring old characters into books - mostly for minor guest appearances, but I get wanting to know who all the characters are from the beginning :)
I hope you like them when you eventually get around to the later ones :)
If I told one of my bookish real life friends, she'd just give me the look she usually gives me when I tell her anything about my bookish weirdness. She doesn't care that much for reading chronologically, she even reads series out of order. Anyway, I'm glad there's someone who can understand my weirdness a little. :)
I'm really excited to start reading my way through Dessen's book catalogue. I'll definitely read some of her books this summer because they do look like the perfect kind of light and fun reads! I have to admit, That Summer doesn't look that interesting to me (maybe because of the ratings and reviews) but I'll still start with it (hopefully soonish!). I'm really excited to get to The Truth About Forever, Just Listen and Along for the Ride and I hope I like them, too!
Thankfully my main real life bookish friend is also my best friend, so she understands my crazy ways better than most. I can't read a book out of series though. It's different if their sort of stand alones within the same world (ie. Sarah Dessen or the WiHi series) but an actual Follow-the-same-characters series has to be read in order.
I have only one really bookish friend (also my best friend) and that's the one who reads series out of order. :) She always reads reviews and spoils herself (it doesn't bother her to know what happens, she wants to know so that she can be able to tell if she'll like a book or not, I would never be able to read books like that but I'm happy it works for her) and if she feels like a book in a series isn't sounding interesting enough, she skips it or she starts somewhere in the middle. I'm like you, I just can't read series out of order. It just doesn't make sense. If it's stand alones with other books following in the same world, it does take me a while to decide in which order I want to read them, though it doesn't bother me too much if I read them "out of order".
Usually I don't want ANY spoilers when reading a book/series...but sometimes I can't help flipping a few chapters if something horrible happens - just to make sure it works out ok-ish in the end :P

I don't want any spoilers either but I'm one of those people who sometimes just have to read the last sentence even though they're not anywhere near it. Sometimes it doesn't tell me anything about the end, sometimes it totally ruins the end of it for me. I was so smart and read the last line of Eleanor & Park when it arrived in my mailbox and it was a really stupid decision. I read the Prologue and if you read the Prologue and the few last sentences, it totally ruins the end for you. At least it did for me. I'll read the book in a readalong next week and I'm really curious how knowing how it ends will influence my enjoyment of the book.
You try not to, but we're only human - sometimes we just have the flip ahead :P
