Is the romance sappy at all?
I can't say whether what you feel is sappy is the same as what I feel is sappy. I often find 'sappy' as 'charming'. In any case, the importance of the book, the reputation it has, the intention of the book itself--means you can set that kind of concern aside. Pick it up and try it, its Lord Dunsany--one of the biggest names in fantasy literature, after all.
