Mary Herceg I've only read Linda Sue Park, and I'm big on Asia. Sorry!

Allison Tebo That's okay!

Tricia Mingerink Gloria Whelan wrote a lot of middle grade books set in various places. Chu Ju's House is set in China. Homeland Bird is set in India. She also has a really good series set in Russia that follows a family from 1914 to fall of the Berlin Wall. I highly recommend all of them. They are middle grade, so not as deep, but they are really well-written and detailed.

Allison Tebo Ohhh - I read Chu Ju's House and forgot. I need to read some of those others - I love MG. Thank you!

Lady Nefertankh The only one that's coming to mind off the top of my head is "Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze" by Elizabeth Foreman Lewis, the author was not Chinese but lived there for several years.

Katie Hanna This is set during WW2, not the 1920s or before--so it may not fit what you're looking for--but "So Far from the Bamboo Grove," by Yoko Kawashima Watkins, is an AMAZING story. Dark (because of wartime), but hopeful and inspiring too.
