I would recommend reading "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens if you haven't read it already! :) I enjoyed it quite a bit! :) Hope this helps, Cat!
Hmmm.... I personally read a lot of obscure older books (like Classics I guess.) because I find they are easier to read and are less uh depressing? I looove Charlotte Mary Yonge's books. You could start with "The Heir of Redclyffe", you can get a free online/kindle on Amazon or Project Gutenberg and there is a free audiobook on Librivox. I also love Crime and Punishment by Dostoyosky. But I know people who don't like it so it is a matter of opinion. Also LOusia May Alcott's books are good.
I guess my question would be what kind of books do you like? Classics vary greatly in style and so it might help to start in an area you already really appreciate. The Brontë's books are wild and dark and very unique. Dickens is a weird and wonderful mix of humor and sadness and Alcott is solid wholesome family stories with good morals. Any of these would be great to start with, probably especially Louisa may Alcott. Her books are not too long and are easy to read. She has some short stories which could be a good place to begin and then there's also "Eight Cousins" and "Little Women" which are good starts in Alcott. I also recommend "Wives and Daughters" by Elizabeth Gaskell if you like Alcott or Austen. It's quite long but one of my favorites ever.
