I would suggest a Michael Crichton book.
"Spider's bite" by Jennifer Estep is a pretty awsome book about an assassin. And if you're looking for something different and original there's "Sins and Needles" by Karina Halle. It's about a con-artist and it's a little weird and messed-up.
