Have you read the thirteenth tale?
What about "The Book Thief?" We also read "each little bird at sings."
Also - the classic,"The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. Or "Angel on the Square" by Gloria Whelan set in Russia 1914-1920
Good! Those sounds like good choices. I never read 13th Tale...loved loved Outsiders when I was their age so that would be fun to revisit.
