Everything by Jodi Picoult is recommended. I haven't stumbled upon any book similar to my sister's keeper. So if you do, please do tell me. I don't know about contemporary fiction with strong female characters. (You could try You against me). But I know that Tamore Pierce is a great author who writes fantasy books with very strong female characters. They're worth the read, if you haven't read them of course.
