Ray Lawler's "Summer of the Seventeenth Doll" (1955) is regarded as one of the seminal works of Australian theatre. In the 1970s, Lawler was commissioned by the Melbourne Theatre Company to write two prequels - "Kid Stakes" and "Other Times" - which trace the same characters through the 1930s and '40s.
