I put this post in another spot before Ashleigh, as I wasn't aware of this thread at the time!

Brilliant book. Easy read, not overly long. Highly recommended, Ashleigh. :):)
I read this book when I was about 16. It's a bit dark in a The Silence of the Lambs way. It is considered to be a bit of a classic so your local library should have a copy. There are some good online second-hand book shops too.
This is a great book. I think it is Fowles best but I never read The French Lieutenants Woman. I enjoyed The Magus but he sort of went a bit off the rails after that for me. The Collector is a unique book as it is a horrifying story, written extremely well in a cool/calm way which makes it more frightening, but there is really no physical violence in it at all. Or given it's 30 years since I read it and I hate graphic unnecessary violence in books and films also it must have been minimal. That I can still feel strongly about this book so long after I think says a lot for how it affected me.
Fowles was a writer of his time with a voice of that time. A touch transcendental. No idea if it reads as old fashioned now. Some books don't age well.
I agree with Stephen - This one and The Magus are John Fowles masterpieces. I picked up The Collector at a B&B and started reading it. Having to leave before I finished I then scouted the second hand stores and found a great early edition Penguin.
It's an excellent book, Ashleigh. I hope you enjoy it.
